Since opening our first location in 1979, we’ve grown into a national leader in automotive service with locations across 19 states. And we’ve stayed true to our mission of providing experienced, trustworthy automotive care and outstanding service every single day.

Our History

Jim Lunceford began his career in the oil business in the 1940s and eventually opened his own auto service station called Jim & Jim’s in Homewood, Alabama. From the start, Jim was determined to find an innovative way to make it fast, easy and convenient for drivers to service their cars.


When Jim heard of a company in California that offered quick oil changes, and then actually saw a fast lube in Memphis, he knew this was the future of car care. He also knew he could do it better than anyone else.


And, well, he did. Since opening his first Express Oil Change & Service Center location in the Birmingham, Alabama area in 1979, the company has grown into a national leader in automotive service with locations across the country. But perhaps even more important than the number of locations is the fact our brand is now synonymous with convenient, high-quality automotive service. Eventually, to reflect it becoming a leader in the tire industry as well, the company became Express Oil Change & Tire Engineers.


Though most of the fine folks working at Express Oil Change & Tire Engineers today weren’t around when Jim opened the doors of his first fast-track bays, one thing has never changed: We continue to provide truly outstanding automotive service at warp speed and at sensible, customer-friendly prices.

1979

Jim Lunceford opens the first Express Oil Change & Service Center in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. In the next five years, Jim opens four more locations.

1984

The first Express Oil Change & Service Center franchise store opens in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

1989

The brand continues to expand throughout the Southeast, opening 18 stores by the end of the 1980s and becomes the regional leader in fast, affordable and high-quality auto care.

1996

Franchise partners Joe Watson and Ricky Brooks acquire the corporation and launch an aggressive expansion program in Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee and Georgia.

1998

The company purchases Tune-Up Clinics in the Atlanta-metro area, giving Express Oil Change & Service Center 25 new locations.

2000

The business marks the opening of its 100th store on October 2 in Foley, Alabama.

2008

Express Oil Change & Service Center celebrates the 10 millionth car serviced since its opening in 1979.

2013

After acquiring seven Tire Engineers locations, the company rebrands to Express Oil Change & Tire Engineers and continues to expand the company’s footprint.

2018

Express Oil Change & Tire Engineers merges with Mavis Discount Tire to form one of the largest automotive maintenance providers in the U.S.

The 300th location launches July 2, 2021, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
